Morgon Grand Cras 2021

The 2021 vintage of Morgon Grand Cras from Mee Godard is a cuvée that embodies freshness and liveliness. On the nose it is distinguished by fresh aromas of red fruits, such as raspberry and redcurrant, accompanied by floral notes and a light touch of wild herbs. On the palate, the wine is bright, with dynamic acidity and delicate tannins, which give it an elegant structure. The finish is clean and refreshing, highlighting a pure expression of fruit and a subtle mineral touch. This Morgon Grand Cras 2021 is a magnificent representation of the continuity of Mee Godard's know-how in the art of winemaking.

"Grand Cras 2017: Redcurrants, blackberries and a tiny hint of farmyard. The tannins on the Grand Cras ripple with muscle in a way that they haven't on her other 2017s. This is the stallion of the stable, wild and darker, a dangerous edge and no brush-tip delicacy here. Rooted in granite. A wine carved from rock. Formidable beauty."

"Realizing the diversity of soils within Morgon, the wine producers there divided that appellation into six fairly large (averaging about 450 acres) climats, one of which is Grand Cras. This one, from Mee Godard, one of the rising stars in Morgon, comes from a single 1-acre plot of 20-year-old vines. The darker soil in Grand Cras compared to that in Corcelette, another of the Morgon climats, tells the story. A bigger and bolder wine, it has a paradoxical austerity and charm. Less accessible with firmer tannins than her Morgon Corcelette at this stage, it has a lovely firmness without a trace of hardness. Give it a few years in the cellar or open and decant it several hours before you serve it with a hearty stew this winter."

"Grand Cras 2020: I'm convinced these Godard wines are becoming more diaphanous and more finesse with every vintage. The strength of them is moving from tannic, extracted power to an inner, more intangible power. Her Grand Cras, which I've always found to be her most formidable, brooding, tannic wine over the years, is still commanding, still a masterpiece of granite-turned-into-wine, but there is a new fluidity, a soaring poetry, a vulnerability, that I have never found in this wine before. It tastes as if Mee Godard has made a connection with her vines that goes beneath the ground. The Grand Cras fruit is, as always, on the blue-black spectrum. We've been picking our own blackcurrants the few last days and I can taste them in this wine, along with the scribble of coal dust and inkiness that is so very Grand Cras. The tannins, though, are cursive, with their own lustrous flow. Liquid obsidian. What a beauty."
