The vintage rewards
Jancis Robinson - 17/
"Damsons and bresaola, streaked with dried basil and soft red peppercorns and a touch of sumac. Warm and gentle. Such fine vibrations that it feels like the hum of a bumble bee. Falls like late-afternoon silk sheets across bare skin. A lustrous glassful of fruit on that perfect cusp of ripeness, the tang of perfectly cured beef and spice. Something almost Rhone-like about the savory intensity of Mee Godard's wines. Beaujolais for the Syrah lover, which is not to suggest for one second that these wines are too big or too hot or not true to their terroir. Mee takes Gamay to its edges, but never crosses the line. She is a magician. Or a dancer."
Michael Apstein – 95/
"Godard just acquired a vineyard in Moulin-à-Vent, expanding his holdings to about 16 acres in total. Au Michelon, located in the northern part of Moulin-à-Vent, has dark stones and dark sandy soil, according to Godard, which she says gives the wine a combination of power and elegance. No doubt about its character. The wine is more floral and supplementary than her wines from Morgon with a suave tannic structure, imparting a velvet-like texture. Long and graceful, the dark fruit and mineral aspect shine. People who look down their noses at Beaujolais will get an education from Mee Godard's wines."
Tamlyn Currin – 17.5/
"Reminds me of a flower market in the best possible way – ferns and damp roses and spicy dianthus and crushed petals and the aromatic green sweetness of myrtle. Mossy. Full of earthy life. A pencil-slim skein of dry tannins that press gently into ripe red hedgerow berries, and a grace note of graphite that carries the finish long and pure and with beautiful gravitas."
William Kelley – 90/
"The 2018 Moulin-à-Vent Au Michelon exhibits rich aromas of smoked meats, mulberries, cherries and exotic spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, eshy palate that's broad and muscular, with rich, powdery tannins, ripe acids and a sapid core of fruit. Like all of Godard's 2018s, it's a serious, structured wine."
